Margaret Oakes was born on 12 April 1850 at Watsontown, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.1,2 She was the daughter of James Bruce Oakes and Maria Durham. Margaret Oakes went by the nick-name of Maggie. Margaret, age 3 months, appeared on the US Census of 1850 living at Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania,in the household of her parents, James Bruce and Maria Oakes.1 Margaret, age 10, appeared on the US Census of 1860 living at Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania,in the household of her parents, James Bruce and Maria Oakes.3 Margaret appeared on the US Census of 1870 living at Delaware Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania,in the household of her widowed mother, Maria Oakes.4 As of 26 May 1885,her married name was Schaffner.
Margaret Oakes, age 35, married Milford Ray Schaffner Esq., age 28 , son of Jacob Schaffner and Maria Metz, on 26 May 1885.2,5,6 Margaret, age 49 years, and Milford Oakes, age 43 years, appeared on the US Census of 1900 at McConnellsburg, Fulton County, Pennsylvania.5 She died on 28 June 1903 at McConnellsburg, Fulton County, Pennsylvania, at age 53.2 Margaret was buried on 30 June 1903 at Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania.2 Margaret's obituary of 1 July 1903, reads:
As the clock in the tower of the Court House was tolling off the hour of four last Sunday afternoon, the spirit of Mrs. Maggie, wife of M. R. Shaffner, Esq., of this place, bade farewell to its earthly tenement and winged its way to celestial blessedness.
It was only a few mouths ago that the friends of Mrs. Shaffer were pained to learn that an insidious disease had fastened itself upon her; and while she had from the first the most careful and constant medical attention, it was beyond the skill of any human agency to save her life.
About a week prior to her death, her symptoms became alarming, and then to the end it was only a struggle to lengthen her -not by days, but by hours.
Maggie Oakes Shaffner, daughter of James and Maria Oakes, was born on the old homestead near Watsontown, Pa., April 12, 1850. On the 26th of May 1885, she was united in marriage with M. R. Shaffner, and they came to this place and went to housekeeping later in the summer of the same year; and during her residence of almost eighteen years here, she, by her quiet, consistent earnest christian life won the highest esteem and most tender affection of all who came within the circle of her influence.
Owing to the fact that interment was made in the Shaffner lot in Riverside cemetery at Huntingdon, Pa, on Tuesday evening, it was necessary to hold the funeral services at seven o'clock Tuesday morning that the train might be reached at Mercersburg at 10:30.
The services were held by her pastor Rev. Wm. A. West, D. D., of the Presbyterian church assisted by Rev. J. H. Mathers, D. D., of Bellwood, Pa., and were most impressive.
The floral tributes--one from the classmates and teacher of her Sunday school class, one from the members of the Missionary society and one from the Christian Endeavor society in both of which she was an active member-and one from members of the Masonic fraternity, were touchingly beautiful.
Besides her husband, the deceased is survived by one brother Mr. J. Bruce Oakes near Watsontown, Pa.
