Walter R. Hefferman was born on 5 January 1890 at Port Jervis, Orange County, New York.1,2,3,4,5,6 He was the son of John Hefferman and Margaret E. Sexton. Walter, age 8, appeared on the US Census of 1900 living at Deerpark, Orange County, New York,in the household of his parents, George William and Margaret E. Travis.5 According to the Middletown, New York, City Directory, 1909, he lived in 30 Canal Street, Middletown, Orange County, New York, in 1909 working as a cigar maker. He is listed as Walter Travis.7 Walter, age 22, appeared on the US Census of 1910 living at Canal Street, Middletown, Orange County, New York,in the household of his step-father, George William and his mothe,r Margaret E. Travis.8 Walter R. Hefferman and an unknown person obtained a marriage license on 4 June 1912 at Orange County, New York.9
Walter R. Hefferman, age 22, married Mary Bernice Malochleb, age 19 , daughter of Louis Edward Malochleb and Louise Kwanowskia, on 12 June 1912 at Middletown, Orange County, New York.
In the 1917 Connecticut Military Census he was recorded, age 27, living on 322 Third Avenue, Orange, Connecticut. He was a cigar maker with a heart condition. He also could not drive an automobile.11
On 5 June 1917, Walter registered for the World War I draft, while living at 322 Third Avenue, West Haven, Connecticut, giving his age as 27 and his employer as Lewis Ostemore & Son, cigar markers.2
Walter, age 39 years, and Mary, age 36 years, appeared on the US Census of 1930 on 147 White Street, West Haven, Connecticut.10 According to the Federal Census in 1930, Walter was a clerk for the railroad.10 Walter, age 49 years, and Mary, age 46 years, appeared on the US Census of 1940 on 147 White Street, West Haven, Connecticut. According to the Federal Census in 1940, Walter was a yard clerk for the railroad.12 Walter registered for the draft giving his age as 52 and his employer as N.Y.M.H. & H. Railroad. in 1942 at 147 White Street, West Haven, Connecticut.3
Walter, age 59 years, appeared on the US Census of 1950 at 322 Third Avenue, West Haven, Connecticut, with his daughter, and her husband.13 He died on 5 January 1969 at Port Jervis, Orange County, New York, at age 79.4,14,15 Walter was buried at Beaverdale Memorial Park, New Haven, Connecticut.14
