He was the son of Fred Joseph Riopelle and Myrtie Dorothy Lombard.1 Alfred, age 2, appeared on the US Census of 1920 living at Chicopee, Massachusetts,in the household of his parents, Fred Joseph and Myrtie Dorothy Riopelle.8 Alfred, age 12, appeared on the US Census of 1930 living at Hawley, Massachusetts,in the household of his parents, Fred Joseph and Myrtie Dorothy Riopelle.9
Alfred married first on 21 November 1938 at Montpelier, Vermont, Helen Mary Graves. She was born about 1922. They were divorced on 18 July 1945.
Alfred, age 22 years, appeared on the US Census of 1940 at Montpelier, Vermont, with his first wife, Helen, and their son, Robert.12 On on 16 October 1940, Alfred registered for the World War II draft, while living at R.F.D., Williamstown, Orange County, Vermont, giving his age as 23 and his employer as Pick Brothers Company.7
He served in the Army Air Force in the 290th Bombardment Group of the 8th Air Force. He enlisted 28 September 1943, and was discharged as a Staff Sargent 18 October 1945.3,4,5,13
Alfred Robert Riopelle, age 28, married Marguerite Marie Burnett, age 17 , daughter of Murvil Francis Burnett and Irene Francelia Eddy, on 16 February 1946 at Grace United Church, Holyoke, Massachusetts.
According to the Springfield, Massachusetts, City Directory, 1947, he lived in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1947.16 Alfred Robert Riopelle died on 13 February 1964 at Greenfield, Massachusetts, at age 46 from natural causes.15,4,5,6 Alfred's obituary of 15 February 1964, reads:
ERVING-Alfred R. Riopelle, 46, of 9 Crescent St. died Thursday at the Treadwell Corporation in Greenfield while making a delivery for Carroll's Trucking Co. Dr. Howard Kemp, medical examiner, said death was due to natural causes. Born Oct. 2, 1917 in Montpelier, Vt., he was the son of Mrs. Myrtie (Lombard) Riopelle. He had lived here for the past nine years. He was brought up in Montpelier and attended schools there. During World War II he served with the Army Air Force in the European Theater. He was a member of the Legion Post in Millers Falls, Damon Spooner VFW Post in Orange, and a member of the Teamsters Union Local 404. He was a driver for Carrolls' Trucking Co. Besides his widow the former Marguerite M Burnett he leaves his mother in Orange three daughters Marion Judy Ann and Cindy Lou all at home six sons Alfred Edward R Lewis G Norman M all at home Robert A of Connecticut and Ronald J of Springfield a sister Mrs. Dorothy Crouse ot Montpelier and a brother Francis L. Riopelle of California The funeral will be held Monday at 2 in St Joseph's Episcopal Church in Athol with Rev Harry Finkenstadt officiating Burial will be in Erving Center Cemetery with full military rites by veterans’ organizations Calling hours will be held tonight and Sunday night from 7 to 9 at the Witty funeral home in Orange.
