Esther Agnes Matthews

     Esther Agnes Matthews was born on 15 August 1874 at Montpelier, Vermont.^1,2,3 She was the daughter of Joseph Matthews and Jane Elisabeth Pareau. Esther appeared on the US Census of 1880 living at Montpelier, Vermont,in the household of her parents, Joseph and Eliza Matthews.⁴

Esther Agnes Matthews, age 20, married Horace William Whelpley, age 24 , son of Captain David C. Whelpley and Harriet Jane Pangbourne, on 4 October 1894 at the Montpelier, Vermont.^5,6 As of 4 October 1894,her married name was Whelpley. As of 15 June 1897,her married name was Gokey.

Esther Agnes Matthews, age 22, married William Orton Gokey, age 22 , son of Charles Cyrus Gokey and Ellen Eliza Johnson, on 15 June 1897 at the Northfield, Vermont.^7,6 Esther Agnes Matthews and William Orton Gokey appeared on the census of 1900 at Boston, Massachusetts.⁷ Esther, age 35 years, and William, age 34 years, appeared on the US Census of 1910 on Clearcut Street, Northfield, Vermont.⁸ Esther, age 45 years, and William, age 44 years, appeared on the US Census of 1920 on 37 Jay Street, Boston, Massachusetts.⁹ Esther, age 55 years, and William, age 54 years, appeared on the US Census of 1930 on 37 Jay Street, Boston, Massachusetts.¹⁰ Esther, age 65 years, and William, age 64 years, appeared on the US Census of 1940 on 37 Jay Street, Boston, Massachusetts.¹¹ In 1941 Esther and William lived at 37 Jay Street, Boston, Massachusetts, according to the Boston, Massachusetts, City Directory, 1941.¹² Esther Agnes Matthews died on 1 August 1964 at Don Camp Nursing Home, South Barre, Vermont, at age 89 from hypertensive cardiovascular disease.^1,2,3 Esther's obituary of 3 August 1964, reads:
